Summary :

Three military documents belonging to Lorenzo W. Shedd of Richmond, Vermont. The first is his appointment as second sergeant in Company F, 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment, dated December 1, 1862. The second is his appointment as second lieutenant in the 9th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, dated November 5, 1863. The third is his appointment as first lieutenant in the 9th U. S. C. T. on May 4, 1865.

Biographical or historical data :

Lorenzo W. Shedd was born in Lowell, Vermont on August 19, 1842, the son of Marcellus A. and Lydia (Wright) Shedd. The family moved to Richmond, Vermont in 1847. Lorenzo enlisted as a corporal in Company F, 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment on June 23, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant on December 1, 1862. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 9th Regiment, United States Colored Troops on November 5, 1863 and to first lieutenant on May 4, 1865. In February, 1866 he was promoted to captain and ordered to join the staff of General Escobado and from November 1869 to February 1871 he served in Mexico City. He died in Richmond, Vermont on September 24, 1910.
