Photocopies of a letter and three newspaper clippings (obituaries) about the death of Lieutenant Robert E. Hitchcock of Shoreham, Vermont. The letter is from Edward S. Dana to Dr. W. A. Hitchcock, father of the deceased, describing the circumstances surrounding Lt. Hitchcock's death. The newspaper clippings are from Vermont papers and include 'resolutions' by the U.S. Marines to honor Lt. Hitchcock for 30 days. Also included is a photocopy of a page from a Vermont history; the page contains information about Edward S. Dana.

Robert E. Hitchcock, the son of William A. and Emily (Hunsdon) Hitchcock, was born on September 29, 1839 in Shoreham, Vermont. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, U. S. Marine Corps on June 5, 1861 and was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. until July, 1861, when his company was ordered to join the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. He was killed at the Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861.
