Title : Bellows Falls general store account book, 1799-1804
Physical Description : 1 volume.
Summary :

A standard general store account book covering the years 1799 to 1804 with accounts divided by customer's names, then dates. It is probable that the store was owned by a member of the Simonds family, most likely William Simonds, a resident of Bellows Falls, a village in Rockingham, Vermont.

Biographical or historical data :

Born in 1723 in Lexington, Massachusetts, Captain William Simonds was descended from William Symonds of Winchester, England, who immigrated to Massachusetts about 1636. Captain Simonds married Susannah Gardner of Lunenburg, MA in 1750, and the couple had at least 4 boys: Gardner (b. 1755 in Charlestown NH), Andrew (b. 1760), Elijah (b 1765) and Lynds (b. 1772). The couple lived in Charlestown, New Hampshire, where their first son was born, between 1751 and 1760, when they moved permanently to the town of Rockingham, Vermont. Simonds is one of the original grantees listed on the Rockingham township charter (1753), and is one of only seven grantees who lived in Rockingham. He served as a town official from the first town meeting in 1761 until his death in 1817.
