Account book of a paper mill in Rutland, Vermont owned by Hiram N. Gookin and Ambrose L. Brown, covering the years 1836 to 1839. The first 133 pages have been torn out: the entries actually begin on page 186 and end on page 639. Customers for the mills and stores range from within Rutland and its surrounding areas to Hinesburg, Vergennes and Glens falls, and to the area around Troy NY.

Biographical or historical data :

The Rutland, Vermont paper mill was in operation by 1820 under the ownership of William Gookin. In 1836, William Gookin sold two-thirds of the mill and machinery to his son, Hiram N. Gookin, and Ambrose L. Brown for six thousand dollars. Gookin and Brown operated the paper mill until it was destroyed by fire.
