Summary :

A shoemaker's daybook covering the years 1852 to 1853; pages within are largely blank though there are entries for standard shoemaking and shoe repair. Though Shipman is listed in the Vermont census as living in Townshend, Vermont, most of his customers appear to have lived in Dover, Vermont, a neighboring town. There is a listing in the front cover of several prominent Dover men, including W. H. Jones and S. W. Sparks.

Biographical or historical data :

James W. Shipman was born in Townshend, Vermont on January 28, 1826, the son of Charles C. and Eunice (Ober) Shipman. He married Elmira Gould of Newfane, Vermont on January 17, 1849. James Shipman was a farmer and shoemaker, first in Townshend and later in Newfane, Vermont. He died October 29, 1898.
