Personal Author : Hebard family.
Title : Hebard family diaries, 1877-1928.
Physical Description : .75 linear feet.
Summary :

This collection is composed primarily of 17 diaries written by members of the Erastus Hebard (1833-1896) family of Randolph, Vermont, 1877-1928. The diaries were written by three generations of family members. Erastus Hebard wrote the first diary in this collection in 1877, followed by 1879, 1880, 1882-1884, 1886-1889. A newspaper article states that Erastus began diary keeping in 1870 and continued the series annually, but a complete set of diaries is not held in the collection. Erastus's son Julius kept diaries in 1921,1922 and for January and February, 1924. He began failing in health and his son, Harry, took over the diary. The collection holds Harry Hebard's diary for 1928 as well. There is also a diary written by Julius C. Hebard's sister, Flora Emeline Hebard Wheeler, for 1923, when she was living in East Braintree, Vermont.

The diaries reveal a self reliant and busy life. Erastus, Julius, and Harry recorded the weather, farm chores, pulling logs, clearing snow from the roads and other tasks. Flora describes the weather, family activities, and her daily chores.

Also included are Erastus' account books, one recording cream production, the other dues, and animal feed.

Biographical or historical data :

Erastus Hebard was born May 29, 1833, the son of Lucius (1797-1875) and Irene Hebard of Randolph, Vermont. He married Harriet H. Morse of Randolph on August 19, 1855. Hebard was a life-long farmer and was prominent in town affairs, serving as Lister and Justice of the Peace. Erastus and Harriet had two children, Julius C. (1857-1924) and Flora E. (1868-1953). He died August 20, 1896.

Julius C. Hebard married Izora E. Cram of Braintree; they had one child, Harold "Harry," born April 21, 1887. Julius died March 6, 1924. Harry Hebard married Florence Richardson (born May 14, 1892-died February, 1978) on July 8, 1917. Harry seems to have preferred to use the last name Hibbard instead of Hebard. Harry was a farmer in Randolph, Vermont, and a poet. Harold M. Hibbard died in July, 1974.

Flora. E. Hebard married Edward A. Wheeler ca. 1895. They had four children, Helen, Bertha, Edward, and Louise.
