Summary :

An account book showing the amounts invested in ships owned by W. H. McKleroy & Co., from 1844 to 1845. The second half of the account book is a cashbook, dating from 1855 to 1866, probably kept by Leonard's brother, Carlos S. Hamilton (1808-1884), who was his partner. After Leonard's death, Carlos settled on a farm in Hartford, Vermont, though he appears to have kept up some of his mercantile activities.

Biographical or historical data :

Leonard Howes Hamilton was born on November 28, 1798, the son of Levi and Salome (Howes) Hamilton, in Hartland, Vermont. In the 1830s and 1840s he operated a wholesale mercantile business, in partnership with his brother, Carlos S. Hamilton, with bases in New York City, Augusta, Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina, and Wetumpka, Alabama. He died in 1846.
