Title : Albert W. Flanders diaries, 1877-1939 (bulk: 1910-1939)
Physical Description : 1.5 linear ft.
Summary :

The collection contains 32 diaries kept by Albert W. Flanders for the years 1877, 1896, and 1910 through 1939. The introduction to Albert's 1877 diary, the first kept by him, describes his intent in keeping the journal, which was to record the weather, his employment and any other information that he might " down for the purpose of mental exercise or improvement..." Albert kept to this format through all the diaries, beginning each entry with detailed weather information and continuing with information about his activities, such as hours worked, farm chores, attending church and lectures, and later, information about his children. Albert was troubled by neuralgia and a number of entries reflect this. During 1917 and 1918, a few of his diary entries reflect national events, such as his reaction to a speech by President Wilson on December 5, 1917 or his opinion of daylight savings.

The collection also includes the typewritten memoirs of Albert W. Flanders and his son, Ernest V, Flanders, as transcribed for a family web site. Albert's memoir contains reminiscences on growing up in New Hampshire and working for the toy factory in Rhode Island. It also contains stories of Ralph Flanders as a child. Ernest V. Flanders' memoir describes his childhood in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and the machine tool industry in Springfield, Vermont.

As well, the collection contains a photograph of the Hanover, New Hampshire, schoolhouse for which Albert Flanders, working in his uncle's mill, provided the interior finish in 1877. Also included in the collection is a "notice to employees" of the R. Bliss Mfg. Co. of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, which spells out the administrative hierarchy in the manufacturing plant in 1899.

Biographical or historical data :

Albert Wellington Flanders was born August 28, 1852, in Compton, Quebec, the son of Hiram and Mary (Alexander) Flanders. His family moved to Grantham, New Hampshire, when he was five. After his parents separated he lived with his mother at her father's, remaining in New Hampshire. Albert married Mary Gilfillan, the daughter of Thomas and Susan (Duncan) Gilfillan, on October 14, 1879 in Barnet, Vermont. They lived in Barnet, Vermont until the mid 1890s, and then Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where Albert trimmed toy tool chests and "tuned steels" for toy pianos for the R. Bliss Mfg. Co. Later the Flanders family moved to North Brookfield, Massachusetts, where they bought a farm. They had nine children, four of which died young. Two of their nine children were Ralph E. Flanders (February 19, 1880-1970), who became a United States Senator from Vermont, and Ernest Flanders (April 20, 1895-1986), husband of the donor. In 1918, Albert, his wife, and his youngest son, moved to Springfield, Vermont where his two eldest sons had settled. Both his sons worked in the machine tool industry and Albert soon found work with Jones and Lamson Machine Company. He died January 7, 1943.
