Summary :

The collection contains Myra Himelhoch's files that were separated from the papers of her husband, sociologist Jerome Himelhoch, at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Myra Himelhoch's papers consist of the research notes she compiled in preparation for Early Plainfield and Its People (1965) and the unpublished compilation "The Annals of Plainfield." The collection includes research on several Plainfield, Vt., families including the Martins and Perrys. The collection also includes "Old Houses of Plainfield" by Flora Bemis Cate and an excerpt from Dean H. Perry's unpublished "History of Barre, Vermont." As well, the collection contains a copy of Himelhoch's "The Allens in Vermont" and her notes on the Allen brothers.

Biographical or historical data :

Myra Samuels Himelhoch was born April 2, 1917 and married Jerome Himelhoch (1916-2001) in 1939. They produced three daughters: Jean Shaffer, Katherine Ng, and Susan Ezeokobe. Myra was a doctorial candidate in history at Washington University in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her husband taught sociology at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont from 1959 to 1966. She was interested in Vermont history especially Plainfield, Vermont, Ethan Allen and the Perry family. Myra Himelhoch was an active faculty wife organizing spouses of faculty and staff around causes. She moved to Sarasota, Florida with her husband in January, 1966, when he joined the faculty of New College, and to Saint Louis in 1968 when he transferred to the University of Missouri at St. Louis. She died in St. Louis in June, 1977.
