Summary :

This collection represents a small portion of the papers of Dorothy Charlotte Walter (1889-1967). Her scrapbooks of early years at Lyndon, Vermont, college days at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and later years are included here. The collection also includes research notes which she compiled as a field worker for the Vermont Commission on Country Life, a partial index to the publications of the Burke (Vermont) Historical Society, a children's story entitled "The Old Witch," and a eulogy to Walter John Coates. Miss Walter was an avid collector of other people's writings and local history some of which are included in this collection, particularly a scrapbook of clippings about the St. Johnsbury, Vermont, region.

Biographical or historical data :

Dorothy Charlotte Walter was born April 27, 1889, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the eldest child of Charles True and Sarah Mabel (Hall) Walter. She received her early education at Lyndon Academy and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University in 1912. Her career included teaching, research work, proof reading and editing, writing, home nursing, and many other activities which is why she came to call herself a "Rolling Stone." Although she traveled quite extensively, the main focus of her life was Vermont and Providence, Rhode Island. She died in 1967.
