Summary :

The collection consists of financial records from a dry goods store in Stowe, Vermont dating from 1861 to 1935. The records include daybooks, ledgers, cashbooks, money orders, and notes payable. The bulk of the records are from the Miles, McMahon store, though around a third of the accounts belong to earlier owners. A few of the records belong to the Mount Mansfield Creamery for the years 1888 to 1902. Cornelius McMahon was one of the founders of the creamery. The collection also contains a small account book kept for 1900 by Howard E. Shaw (b. 1867), a storekeeper in Stowe, Vermont.

Biographical or historical data :

Around 1812, Philo G. Camp and Abial Stiles opened a dry goods store in Stowe, Vermont. Several years later the store was taken over by Philo Camp's brother, Riverius Camp (1782-1864). The store remained in the Camp family until 1870, when Asa R. Camp (b.1809), son of Riverius, sold the store to Christopher F. Douglas in 1870. The store changed hands several times, first being sold to Henry B. Oakes and Dan Cady in 1874, then in 1876, to William Hale and James E. Miles. Shortly after that, another merchant, Emory C. Mower, bought out the stock and moved it to his store in Center Village. In 1878, Cornelius McMahon (1853-1924), a clerk in the store, bought out Emory C. Mower and in 1881 he joined with James E. Miles and formed the Miles & McMahon store. The store operated from 1881 until 1955. James E. Miles sold his interest in the company to Cornelius' son, Harold McMahon (1886-1934), in 1905, at which time the name changed to "Miles, McMahon & Son", later changing to Miles, McMahon & Co. The store sold everything from dry goods to house furnishings, and was located in what was in 2003 the Carlson Building on Main Street in Stowe, Vermont.
