Biographical or historical data :

According to its 1997 workshop catalog, Woman Centered was founded "as a resource and referral center for Vermont women who are seeking ways of move on." It was founded in 1993 by Clotilde Whitney Pitkin. According to the catalog, "Woman Centered provides the tools for learning to trust our instincts and judgment, picking up new job skills and building stronger relationships with the people with whom we live and work." The organization offered workshops by local women; the center's organizers worked to help women share their talents and receive recognition for their work.

The organization included a core group of members interested in the arts. In 1994 Woman Centered started the Women's Work Project, a celebration of women's creative energy. Although originally focused on writers and the visual and performing arts, the celebration grew to encompass women's creativity in business, service industries, social services, the law, and the home. One feature of the Project was the display of women's artwork in Montpelier store windows. Onion River Arts Council cosponsored the event.
