Summary :

This collection contains papers from the founding of the organization Vermonters for Lesbian and Gay Rights in the 1980s. Included are the constitution and minutes of early meetings in the 1985 and 1986. The exact date of the founding of VLGR cannot be ascertained from the records, but by January 1984 they were circulating a flyer on VLGR letterhead announcing a meeting to organize the second Lesbian and Gay Pride March. Howard Russell was elected "facilitator" of VLGR, the organization's top elected official, at its October 6, 1985, meeting.

The collection also includes materials from Gay Pride events from 1983-1987, including a sheet of chants, "Guidelines for a Safe and Peaceful Parade," a few posters, and newspaper clippings from the first Gay and Lesbian Pride March in Burlington in June 1983. Also included in the collection is the 1985 Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights Statement with supporting signatures. There are survey forms completed as part of the 1986 Discrimination/Harassment Documentation Project; tallied results of the survey have not survived as part of the collection, although the results of a "Discrimination and Violence Survey" were published in the June 1987 issue of Out in the Mountains, a closely affiliated "voice for lesbians, gay men, and our supporters in Vermont."

The first issue of Out In The Mountains was published in February 1986. Pre-publication materials, handwritten articles, layout, of some of the first issues are part of the collection. Copies of the newspaper are bound and in the VHS library collection under the call number Folio 305 Ou8.

The collection also includes publications and pamphlets concerning AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases from sources such as American Red Cross, U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation
