Biographical or historical data :

The Kents were a prominent family in Calais, Vermont, in the nineteenth century. Remember Kent (1775-1855) settled in Calais in 1798. He had six sons, one of whom was Abdiel Kent (1805-1887). Abdiel was a successful businessman, operating a shoe factory, store, sawmill, brick making business, and other enterprises. Abdiel had two wives: first, Fanny H. Curtis (1822-1854) and second, Lucy A. Bliss (1830-1907). With his second wife Abdiel had three children, two of whom were Herbert Allen Kent (1864-1916) and Oliver Howard Kent (1872-?). O. H. remained unmarried when he moved to Boston in 1911. In 1902, Herbert married Helen Holmes McKnight (1881-1966). Helen Kent collected most of the photographs in this collection. It is this branch of the family that this collection principally documents, although there are photographs of other branches of the Kent family in this collection as well.

Herbert and Helen had four children, Josephine Mary Kent (1903), Edwin Abdiel Kent (1904), Laura McKnight Kent (1906), and Howard Kent (1911).

Atwater Kent (1873-1949) was a prominent member of another branch of the Kent family represented in this collection. He was descended from Remember Kent through his son Remember (1799-1881) and his son Prentiss (1834-1919). Atwater Kent was born in Burlington, Vermont, in 1873 and died in Los Angeles, California, in 1949. He was an electrical and mechanical engineer who held 97 U.S. patents including what became a standard type of automobile ignition. In addition to his automobile electronics business he developed radios. The Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company became the world's largest producer of radios. He closed the factory and retired in 1936. In Bel Air, California, he built a palatial 32-room Italian style mansion, "Cappo di Monti."
