Vermont Historical Society Library  Doc 491 (cont'd in Doc 492, XMSC 78)  Manuscript  Vault-Manuscript

Personal Author : Lamphere, Jeanne Densmore, 1930-
Title : Jeanne Lamphere family history collection.
Physical Description : 2 linear ft.
General Note : Continued in: Doc 492 and XMSC 78.
Summary :

The collection is composed of two notebooks about the Chalmers family (1739-1955), and one chronicling the Russell, Flint, and Densmore families (1822-1980s). An 1862 ledger from the West Topsham store belonging to Eli Densmore is shelved as XMSC 78.

The notebooks include many original photographs, documents, a few letters, and photocopies of newspaper clippings documenting family events. They include an extensive list of cemeteries where family members are buried, including Newbury, West Topsham, Orange Center, Berlin, Green Mountain Cemetery (Montpelier), Corinth, Cutler Corner (East Montpelier), Middlesex and other locations.

The Chalmers I notebook includes a yellow sheet inside the cover with information from Ruth Wallace (Chalmers) Densmore, Doris Thompson Chalmers, and Julia Buxton Granges. The volume quotes material from the Orange County Gazeteer and Directory (1888) and includes notes on the Newbury Cemetery. It covers the period up to 1980. The Parmenter, Buxton, Chalmers, Barton family history was compiled in 1980; most of the information and photographs are pre-1975.

Two albums of photographs were disassembled and their contents placed in plastic sleeves. These photographs are stored in Doc 492. Two daguerreotypes (one of Mary Jane Parmenter and Eunice Parmenter and the other of Alonzo Flint) and one ambrotype (of Rebecca Buxton) were removed to the VHS collections for these photographic types.

Also included in the collection is a program listing shipboard entertainment aboard the U.S.S. Vermont, whose passengers were soldiers enroute home from World War I (two copies). An 1862 daybook of Benjamin Buxton of Montpelier is included as well.
