Summary :

Transcripts of two Civil War diaries kept by Eugene W. Rolfe. The first diary covers the period of his enlistment, when he and some friends ran away to enlist in another town, to his service at the front and his hospitalization. After his leave he returned to Washington, D.C. The second diary chronicles his journey back to his unit and the final engagements of the artillery at Petersburg, Virginia. There is also a transcription of a letter written by Rolfe dated March 2, 1865.

Biographical or historical data :

Eugene W. Rolfe was born on November 24, 1845 in Tunbridge, Vermont, the son of Gustavus and Eliza (Marston) Rolfe. He enlisted in the Third Battery Light Artillery on August 30, 1864 and mustered out on June 15, 1865. After the war, he worked as a journalist. He died March 9, 1912.
