Summary :

The collection contains transcriptions of letters written by Shubael Wheeler to his daughter Emily during the years 1852 to 1866. During that time Emily married, Shubael's wife and another daughter died, and Emily and her husband moved to Wisconsin. The letters also contain information about daily life and current events in Calais and Montpelier, Vermont, as well as information on gardening and cooking. The collection also includes two photographs of a quilt made by Emily in 1854. One photograph shows the text embroidered on the quilt.

Biographical or historical data :

Shubael Wheeler was the son of Jerahmel Bowers Wheeler and Sibbel French. Shubael practiced law in East Calais, Vermont. He served in the Vermont legislature in 1833-1834 and in 1847, and was elected assistant judge for Washington County, 1827 to 1831 and county clerk, 1846-1849. Shubael Wheeler married Elsey Davis (1797-1860) October 5, 1818 in Montpelier, Vermont. They had six children: Emily M. (1819-1892), Amanda (1821), Evaline (1828-1850), Elsey D. (1824-1860), Thomas Paine (1833-1857), Elmira (1840-1841). Shubael's eldest daughter, Emily, married Levi Wright and moved to Merrimac, Wisconsin. After the death of his wife, Shubael eventually moved to Wisconsin to live with his daughter. He died there on October 17, 1868.
