Personal Author : Smith family.
Title : Smith family papers, 1895-1987.
Physical Description : 2.25 linear ft.
Summary :

This collection gives the reader some insights into the history and growth of the Burlington Savings Bank and the family that was responsible for its growth. There is an 1895 document turning over the business of the Burlington Savings Bank to Charles Smith, as well as materials on mutual savings banks on a national level and the promotion and selling of World War II Savings Bonds.

Most of the papers belonged to Levi P. Smith, including a document box full of correspondence. There are family household bills, letters to children, obituaries, and estate documents.

Although these records are a small part of the total archive that KeyBank disposed of, they do give an understanding of the importance that the Smith family played in local and national banking affairs and progress.

Biographical or historical data :

Charles Plimpton Smith (1847-1937) was president of the Burlington Savings Bank for forty-five years and was chairman of the board of directors when he died. He represented Burlington in the State Legislature in 1894 and 1896 and served as senator from Chittenden County in 1898. He served as director of many corporations.

Levi P. Smith (1885-1970) was the eldest son of Charles P. Smith. He was president and chairman of the board of Burlington Savings Bank. He was active in leadership positions in state and national banking groups, and was chairman of the Vermont Savings Bonds committee for twenty-five years. Levi Smith served one year in the Vermont House of Representatives and three terms in the Vermont Senate, 1925-1930. He was a leader in many civic and charitable projects in Vermont as well as serving as director on corporate boards.

Frederick P. Smith (1915-1985) was one of Levi Smith's three sons. He also served as president (1959-1976) and chairman of the board (1967-1985) of the Burlington Savings Bank. A more extensive biography is part of the finding aid for the Frederick P. Smith Papers.

Levi P. Smith, Jr. (b. 1918), youngest son of Levi P. Smith, served in the military and in the Foreign Service before joining the Burlington Savings Bank where he was comptroller and assistant to the president.
