The series contains material relating to the fifth generation of the Fairbanks family of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. It is organized in two subseries: A. Edward Joseph Fairbanks (1910-1979); B. Philip Merrill Fairbanks (1913-1997).

The items relating to Edward Joseph Fairbanks consist of letters written to him by family members, school work and miscellaneous material dating from 1917 to 1918. The letters date mainly from his childhood and include a letter to Santa Claus written for him by his mother.

The material relating to Philip Merrill Fairbanks also consists mainly of letters written to him as a child, as well as a few printed items from Yale University and an invitation to Philip's graduation from George Washington University Law School.

Biographical or historical data :

Philip Merrill Fairbanks (1913-1997), was born in St. Johnsbury and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Yale (class of 1935) and the George Washington University Law School (class of 1938). Judge Fairbanks' distinguished legal career culminated in his appointment to the Maryland Circuit Court where he served from 1973 until his retirement.
