Summary :

The collection consists of photocopies of letters mostly written by Henry P. Burnham of Williamstown, Vermont, to his parents and sisters while he served in the Civil War. The letters trace his army life, from the time of his enlistment in August 1862, until his death in 1864.

The collection also includes materials concerning Henry Burnham's death, including letters to David Burnham from his daughter, Martha, and son-in-law, Winslow, as well as official letters from Sergeant Thomas H. White in Co. G, with the particulars of Henry's death; a letter to Martha Burnham and her husband from her sister Emma; and a death notice from Walton's Daily Journal, September 15, 1864.

Biographical or historical data :

Henry P. Burnham, of Williamstown, Vt., was born Dec. 11, 1843, the son of David (b.1802) and Betsy Olds Burnham (1803-1862). He enlisted August 5, 1862, as a private in the 10th Vermont Regiment, Co. G. During 1863 and 1864 he saw action in Virginia when his Regiment was involved in the Wilderness Campaign and the Battles of Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Winchester, among others. Burnham was killed at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864.
