The collection contains information on the construction and improvement projects, funded jointly by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), the State of Vermont, and the cities of Barre and Montpelier. The collection also contains materials relating to daily administrative issues such as snow plowing, heating, shared responsibilities between the Airport Commission and Federal Agencies, correspondence, minutes of the airport commission, and testimony related to carrier service.

In addition, the collection includes maps and photographs of the airport, aw well as information regarding leases of the airport land, a house and outbuildings on the property, and managing the farmland. A history of the airport from 1934 also forms part of the collection.

Biographical or historical data :

Motivated in part by the flood of November 1927 which left Barre and Montpelier isolated, citizens of these two central Vermont communities organized committees for the purpose of creating an airport to serve their needs. The two communities purchased two farms in Berlin, Vermont, the community between Barre and Montpelier, on which to build the airport. The airport was officially dedicated on June 6 and 7, 1930, by Vermont Governor John W. Weeks. Work began on creating two paved runways in March 1936, financed in part by the Works Progress Administration; they were completed in October of that year.

The airport was called the Barre-Montpelier Airport until March 25, 1970, when it was renamed the Edward F. Knapp Airport in honor of the man who had served as State Commissioner of Aeronautics for 25 years.
