Summary :

The papers consist of two diaries and five folders of supporting biographical and genealogical material, including several photographs. Also included is research material relating to the estate of Hezekiah Tracy in Shelburne, Vermont. Franklin H. Morehouse purchased land from the estate. One of the diaries was written by Franklin H. Morehouse and covers the year 1857. It contains entries describing farm life, including references to planting, harvesting, logging and the weather as well as entries on attending religious meetings. The other diary is that of Roderick D. Morehouse for the year 1865, which documents his life in the 142nd New York Infantry Regiment during the final months of the Civil War and his transition back to civilian life.

Biographical or historical data :

Franklin H. Morehouse (1804-1862) farmed in Shelburne, Vermont. He was twice married and had eight children. His son, Roderick D. Morehouse (1835-1899) was born in Shelburne, Vermont. He enlisted in Company H of the 142nd New York Infantry Regiment on September 10, 1862 and was mustered in as Second Lieutenant. He was wounded on September 29, 1864 at Chaffin's Farm, Virginia. On February 17, 1865 he was made Captain and on March 13, 1865, a Major by brevet. He mustered out on June 7 1865.
