Summary :

The papers include a diary kept by Elliott's father, Ansil, in the years 1844-1848, which tells of his life as a farmer in Wilmington, Vermont. The daily entries are brief, but give a good idea of the variety of tasks involved in early farming, and an active church life. The papers also include some records and accounts of Elliott's experiences in the Civil War, including settling up his dry goods store accounts before going into the army. There are a number of letters from his future wife, correspondence involving the settling of his father's estate, and some records of the cost of setting up his married home. There is also a collection of photographs, including Adams family graves in Wilmington, and Wells and Banfield relatives.

Biographical or historical data :

Elliott Adams (1838-1919) was the third child of Ansil Adams (1808-1858), a farmer in Wilmington, Vermont, and Lucinda Colman Adams. Elliott Adams served in the 16th Regiment, Co. F, Vermont Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1872 Elliott married Sarah E. Wells of Wilmington, Vermont and the couple moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts, where he worked as a photographer. Elliott and Sarah Adams had a child, Helen Moore Adams, who married Edward C. Banfield in 1912.
