Biographical or historical data :

Humphrey and Smith, a general store owned by Charles T. A. Humphrey and Harris and/or Olin H. Smith, was in business in East Burke, Vermont, between 1856 and 1866.

Charles Timothy Allen Humphrey (b. January 2, 1822) was a co-owner of the store with Harris Smith in 1859 and 1860, according to evidence in the collection's legal papers. Humphrey, born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, held many town offices and served in the 1860-1861 Vermont legislature. He was a director of the Merchant's National Bank of St. Johnsbury. Just when Olin H. Smith was a partner with Humphrey is undocumented; there are, however, business letters in the collection addressed to him which suggest his involvement with the business. Nothing is known about Harris or Olin H. Smith.
