Summary :

Eldin J. Hartshorn began his diary on January 1, 1864, before his reenlistment. This portion of the diary contains information on social life in Lunenburg, including church meetings, temperance meetings and news of veterans home on leave. By March, Hartshorn was involved in recruiting volunteers for the 17th Vermont Regiment. The diary contains information on camp life in Burlington, Vermont, the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg Mine. On August 14, 1864, Hartshorn received a leave of absence, so the diary contains local information, including a visit to the state capital, Montpelier, until his return to the front on November 27, 1864.

Biographical or historical data :

Eldin J. Hartshorn, a teacher from Lunenburg, enlisted in Company E, Fifteenth Vermont Regiment on September 15, 1862 with the rank of sergeant. On January 15, 1863 he was promoted to second lieutenant and mustered out August 5, 1863. He reenlisted April 12, 1864, this time as captain of Company G, Seventeenth Vermont Regiment. He mustered out on July 14, 1865.
