Personal Author : Muller, Margaret Paddock Hazen, 1905-1994.
Title : Margaret Hazen Muller photo collection, ca. 1840-ca. 1910.
Physical Description : 36 photographs (2 boxes, 4 folders).
Summary :

This collection includes 36 photographic images of members of the Dustin and Paddock families, related family members, and friends from the Craftsbury, Vermont, area taken during the period ca. 1840 - ca. 1910. Many of the subjects of the photos were related to the Crafts family through marriage. Thirteen of the images are daguerreotypes, 15 are ambrotypes, 7 are tintypes, and one is a small print from a negative. It is surmised that some of these photographs may have been made by James Wellington Stevens, a Craftsbury photographer. Stevens' image appears in one of the photographs in this collection (see FB 64.25). In addition to the photographs, a small notebook (3.75" x 6") was acquired with the collection. This notebook contains 17 newspaper clippings, all of which relate to Margaret (Hazen) Muller's aunt, Carolyn Augusta (Paddock) Pratt.

Biographical or historical data :

Margaret Paddock Hazen, the collector of these photographs, was born on 16 July 1905 in Meriden, Conn. She was the firstborn of Rev. Frank William Hazen and Mary Crafts Paddock. Margaret Hazen graduated from the University of Vermont (UVM) with a Ph.B. degree (Pre-Med) in 1926. She lived and worked in New York City, where she met John Theodore Muller. She and John were married on 30 May 1933. Margaret and John Muller lived in East Orange, New Jersey, and gave birth to a daughter, Lynette Sayre Muller, on 24 Sep 1936. John and Margaret were divorced in 1938.

After the death of her brother David (in May 1937), Margaret moved to Danville, Vt., where she lived with her mother and daughter for six years. She then moved to Burlington, Vt., where she lived for 50 years. By 1973, she was Fiscal Agent and Administrative Secretary for the UVM Dept. of Community Medicine. She eventually retired from UVM where she had worked in teacher placement for 20 years. Mrs. Muller was a longstanding member of the Vermont Historical Society and was president of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Margaret (Hazen) Muller died 4 Feb 1994 at the Ferris Community Care Home in Bristol, Vt. Surviving her was her daughter, Lynette (Muller) Denney of Middlebury. An ancestral chart for Margaret Paddock (Hazen) Muller and family group sheets for members of her family are included in the collection.
