Summary :

The collection includes a variety of papers required to run a business during the first half of the twentieth century. The number of records for each year are uneven. The collection includes catalogs of this company and other companies, drawings, plans of machines, photographs of the company's products, correspondence, orders, invoices, time books, and stock holder records. Also included are a few diaries of the last president, Ernest M. Wheatley.

The collection also includes correspondence with Philip H. Hoff who represented Mr. Wheatley when his building in Chester was partially demolished by a derailment on the Rutland Railroad. Mr. Hoff became governor of Vermont in 1960.

Biographical or historical data :

Boynton and Plummer was incorporated in Maine in 1909 with William J. H. Nourse serving as president. The company moved to Worcester, Mass., was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1912 as part of Wilder Industries, Inc. Boynton and Plummer was incorporated in Vermont in 1918, under the leadership of John A. McGuire. At some point it absorbed Baxter Machine Co. of Lebanon, New Hampshire. Ernest M. Wheatley was elected president in 1927. The company struggled through the Depression and dissolved in the 1940s.

Boynton and Plummer produced metal working machinery including drilling machines, shapers, and bolt threaders in addition to wood working machinery, including planers, jointers, shapers, and saw tables.
