Summary :

Transcripts of approximately 40 letters written by Henry M. Ellis to his brother Leander Ellis of Williamstown, Vermont, 1858-1868. Henry wrote first from Vinton, Iowa, and then from Marion, Arkansas. Henry became a Southern sympathizer and served as a captain in the Confederate Army. Many of the letters were written during the war and sent from the U.S. prison at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Also included in the collection is an essay about Henry M. Ellis titled "An Adaptable Yankee", written by Loriman S. Brigham.
