Personal Author : Martin family.
Title : Martin Family Papers, 1807-1923 (bulk 1897-1914).
Physical Description : 1.5 linear ft. (2 boxes).
Summary :

The Martin family papers span the years 1807-1923; the majority of the material is dated 1897-1914. The earliest material (1816-1860) consists mainly of deeds to land belonging to Jonathan Lewis.

The collection includes a significant number of letters written between 1893 and 1913 to Maria Martin by her brother, Elam, and her son, Lewis, an osteopathic physician in Barre and father of the donor, Victoria LeMay. Twenty-one of Maria Martin's diaries (1806-1910), as well as H.P. Martin's account books for 1875, 1889, 1898 are included. There are 20 account books with no indication of who kept them, dated 1897-1910. One was distributed by the Vermont Chemical Fertilizer Company of Vergennes, offering Halls Coral Fertilizer. It includes testimonials from customers and an explanation of coral formation.

There are also grade reports from Vermont Methodist Seminary (1884-1885) and materials concerning the Williamstown Methodist Church (1890-1911). Papers relating to the estate of A.M. Farnham (1899-1903) are also included. (The Farnhams were related to Maria Martin's mother.)

The collection also includes the transcript of an interview of Victoria Martin LeMay by Greg Sharrow in 1992 (Doc 418, Folder 0.2).

Biographical or historical data :

The Martin family settled in Williamstown in the 1790s.

This collection centers on Maria Lewis who married Herbert Proctor Martin (1842-1905). Their children, Lewis and Olive, maintained a steady correspondence with them, as did Maria's brother, Elam Lewis. The family owned Cutter Pond, now known as Lotus Lake. Many family members remain in the Central Vermont area.
