Hollister Mills records include eight account books and one diary that summarize the business operations of the Hollister family at their grist and sawmills in the East Montpelier village of North Montpelier, Vermont. Most accounts are listed under personal names with entries for amounts and varieties of grain milled and lumber sawed and planed with prices charged and notes for when accounts were settled. Several of the books have many blank pages and there is considerable overlap of dates within the collection.

Biographical or historical data :

Horace Hollister purchased the grist and sawmill operations which were across the road from the woolen mill in the East Montpelier village of North Montpelier in 1853. In 1855 he built new mills on the site. Two years later he leased the operation to his son, J. Edwin Hollister. Another son, Martin Van Buren Hollister purchased the mills in 1866 and continued the business until 1900 when he sold out to Joseph W. Butterfield.
