Summary :

This collection consists of the papers of the children of James Allen (1792-1874) of Winhall, Vermont. It includes the Civil War letters and journals of Jonathan Vaile (1841-1864) written in Pittman shorthand; letters from Anson (1829-1884) of Orono, Maine; and letters to Mary (b. 1837) from Joseph Edwin Butterfield (1839-1864) while serving in the Civil War.

Biographical or historical data :

James (1792-1874) and Sarah Howe Allen (1800-1837), of Winhall, Vt., had eight children. Those represented in the collection are Anson (1829-1884) and Mary (b. April 9, 1837). After Sarah's death, James married Polly Vaile (d. 1887) and had a son Jonathan Vaile (1841-1864) and Henry Seldon Allen (1848-1925).

Jonathan Vaile Allen (1841-1864) was a school teacher prior to the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. H of the 8th Vermont in January 1862 as a private. He was eventually promoted to sergeant. He was killed in action in the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. He is buried in the Winchester (Virginia) National Cemetery.

Joseph Edwin Butterfield (1839-1864) was a school friend of Mary Allen. He enlisted as a private in Co. I of the 2nd Vermont in May 1861. He was killed in action May 5, 1864, in the Battle of the Winterness. He is buried at the Middletown Cemetery in Winhall, Vt.
