Summary :

Papers of the Charles Carroll Parker family of Waterbury, Vt. The earliest item is from 1840 informing Charles Paper that he has been elected to the University of Vermont Society for Religious Enquiry. The following letters are primarily about Parker's career as a minister, and his appointment as a delegate of the United States Christian Commission during the Civil War. There is a series of letters written in 1864 by Parker to his wife, Lizzie, and family in Waterbury, Vt., while he was travelling with the Army of the Potomac. There is a Civil War letter from Edward N. Phelps of Co. I, 9th Vermont Regiment, August 18, 1862; and an unidentified letter from Frederick City.

There is also a series of letters from Edmund Parker, a tally clerk in City Point, Va., to his family. Included is a letter from Sam W. Torrey in City Point, Va., to "Parker," November 18, 1964; and a letter to "Laura" from W. P. Dillingham, Washington, D.C., March 24, 1921.

Biographical or historical data :

Edward N. Phelps was born in 1841 at Waterbury, Vt. On June 7, 1862, he enlisted as a Corporal in Co. I, 9th Vermont Regiment. He was reduced in grade on March 4, 1864, was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on March 25, 1864, and was mustered out of the service on July 9, 1865. He died of plthisis parlmonalis on July 7, 1881 at Burlington, Vt., and was buried there in Elmwood Cemetery.
