Title : Sherman-Safford papers, 1848-1907.
Physical Description : .5 linear ft. (1 box).
Summary :

Collection consists of letters and journals, 1848-1907. The letters are written by and to members of the Sherman family of Montgomery and Ludlow, Vt., and members of the Safford family of North Troy, Cambridge, and Morrisville, Vt. Alva F. Sherman, in 1857, married Charlotte Safford, and some years after her death married her sister, Mary Elizabeth Safford. The correspondence was apparently saved by these individuals, although there are letters to and from many other members of the their families.

There is much material on religious matters and medical matters. Sherman and his brothers sold medicine in their youth and he became a pharmacist. There is also correspondence about poor health in the family. The letters reveal a Republican and anti-slavery viewpoint.

Two of Sherman's brothers were officers in the 9th Vermont Regiment, and wrote often of the actions in which the 9th was engaged. His brother-in-law, Darius J. Safford, was a captain in the 1st Vermont Artillery, and wrote graphic accounts of the battle of Winchester and of Sheridan's ride. Sherman's parents in Montgomery wrote of the St. Albans Raid.

Members of both families and neighbors emigrated to the west and there are many descriptive letters from Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
