Letter dated 16 January 1865 written by Sergeant Murdo McDonald of the 17th New York Battery, 24th Army Corps to Ida A. Holt, a nine year old girlfrom West Rutland, Vermont, thanking her for a "comfort bag" she had contributed to the Christian Commission.

Biographical or historical data :

Murdo McDonald was born on 3 September 1838 in Balnain, Scotland. He emigrated to New York around 1855 and settled in Medina, New York. On 26 August 1862 he enlisted in the New York 17th Light Artillery Battalion, was promoted to Corporal in 1863 and to Sergeant on 8 December 1864. He mustered out on 12 June 1865. Murdo McDonald died on 2 January 1922 in St. John's, Michigan.

Ida Asenath Holt was born 1 September 1856 in West Rutland, Vermont, the daughter of Lorenzo Paul and Asenath (Haskell) Holt. She married Asahel Bingham Johnson on 31 August 1875 and died on 24 June 1942 in Rutland, Vermont.
