Summary :

Photocopy of a letter from Mrs. Abram (Roxy) Holmes of Calais, Vt., to Governor Frederick Holbrook, asking for help in getting her sick son, George P. Holmes, home from Ship Island, Mississippi, where he is serving in the Civil War. She also expresses concern for her son Clark J. Holmes who is serving in the 11th Vermont Regiment.

Biographical or historical data :

Clark J. Holmes was born on August 3, 1832 at Milton, Vt. On July 19, 1862 he enlisted as a Private in Co. I, 11th Vermont Regiment. He was listed as a deserter on June 27, 1863. He died of arteriosclerosis on April 11, 1916, at Worcester, Vt., and was buried there on April 13, 1916, in the Village Cemetery.

George P. Holmes was born in 1843 at Milton, Vt. He enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 8th Vermont Regiment, on November 29, 1861. He was taken prisoner at Boutte Station, La., on September 4, 1862. He was paroled on November 13, 1862, and was discharged on March 5, 1863, by special order of the War Department. He died of nephritis on September 2, 1913, at Burlington, Vt., and was buried in the Village Cemetery at Waterbury, Vt.
