Summary :

This collection contains the account books used by Smith & Somerville, a hardware store in Waterbury, Vermont, during the normal course of business. The largest series is a set of books with daily transactions. Also included are daily journals which summarize the financial status of the business, two books of check stubs, and three other financial ledgers.

Biographical or historical data :

Smith & Somerville was organized in 1888 as Harwood & Smith by Charles Harwood and A. H. Smith. In 1890 Mr. Somerville bought out the interest of Mr. Harwood and went into partnership with J. F. Somerville, renaming the business Smith & Somerville. The business was located on Main Street in Waterbury, at the head of Stowe Street. The business closed about 1930.
